CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: The Oddfellows is one of the largest and oldest friendly societies currently operating in the UK. Evolving from the medieval Trade Guilds, the Oddfellows began in the City of London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and established local groups across England and Wales. In 1810 the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows was formed by a number of local social groups joining together. As the idea caught on, more and more groups started up around the country, generally meeting in pubs and church halls and now many Branches own their own meeting place or Oddfellows hall. Today the Oddfellows is a social and care organisation.
