CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: Merthyr Tydfil Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1911, to impound the waters of the Taf Fechan. Construction of the dam, by Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons started in 1913. The 1st World War halted the works, which were resumed in 1918, using direct labour. The Taf Fechan Water Supply Board was set up to take over the running of the reservoir from the Corporation, along with the Pentwyn, Lower and Upper Neuadd Reservoirs, in 1921.
