Administrative and biographical history: Lord Lieutenants represent the Crown in each county of the United Kingdom. The Lord Lieutenant sits on the Advisory Committee responsible for nominating and recommending Justices of the Peace. The Lord Lieutenant also became responsible for the local militia, essentially created by the Militia Bill 1757. The Royal Montgomery Regiment of Militia was created in Montgomeryshire. It became defunct in 1831, but was revived in 1852 as the Royal Montgomery Rifles (later the 4th Battalion of the South Wales Borderers). The Royal Eastern Montgomery Regiment of Local Militia was also raised in 1809. A Montgomery Volunteer Legion was raised in 1803. In 1809, its infantry was transferred to the local militia, and it continued as the Volunteer Cavalry (or Yeoman Cavalry). In 1871, command of these was transferred from the Lord Lieutenant to the Crown. Montgomeryshire's Lieutenancy was amalgamated with those of Brecknockshire and Radnorshire following local government reorganisation and the creation of the county of Powys in 1974.
