Administrative and biographical history: School Boards were established under the Elementary Education Act 1870 in areas with inadequate voluntary school provision and could raise a local rate to pay for new schools. They were abolished by the Education Act 1902, with County Councils becoming the local education authorities. Trefeglwys School Board was responsible for Gleiniant School, Llawr-y-glyn School and Staylittle School in Trefeglwys while Llangurig School Board was responsible for Llangurig Village School, Cwmbelan School and Pant-mawr School in the parish of Llangurig.
