CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: J. G. Williams and P. M. Beales were a firm of solicitors based in Hay-on-Wye, Brecknockshire. They collected papers relating to lands in the counties of Brecknockshire, Radnorshire and Herefordshire. They also accumulated court records including the Brecon Court of Assizes and Courts of Quarter Sessions and Petty Sessions. Until the establishment of county and district councils in 1888 and 1894, the Quarter Sessions was responsible for both judicial matters and the civil administration of the county; the Petty Sessions dealt with minor cases such as petty theft, drunkenness, minor assaults, bastardy and failure to maintain families, larceny, trespassing, fraud and juvenile cases, as well as ale licensing and adoption. Williams and Beales also accumulated some papers of Breconshire County Council.

Beales, solicitors, Hay-on-Wye, 1558-1973, including Brecknockshire Assize records, 1867-1918; Brecknockshire Court of Quarter Sessions records, 1868-1884; Hay Petty Sessions Division records, 1859-1904; records of the Clerks of the Peace and Brecknockshire County Council, 1885-1906; Brecknockshire County Council Education Committee minutes, 1973-1974; and miscellaneous deeds and records, relating mainly to Brecknockshire and Radnorshire, 1558-1973.
