Administrative and biographical history: Until 1894 civil administration at the parish level was supervised through the vestry meetings. The parish was administered by a number of officials including an overseer of the poor. The overseer had responsibility for administering the Poor Law and his duties included giving out poor relief, assessing the entitlement of individuals to settle in the parish and arranging the removal of undesirables to their own parish. The overseer also collected the poor rates to fund his work. This system was superseded by the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834.
Scope and content: Records relating to Knighton Parish, 1666-1831, including accounts of the Churchwardens and overseers of the poor 1666-1683; overseers' disbursements, 1741-1746; bastardy bonds, 1750-1760; settlement certificates, 1743-1783; removal orders, 1723-1831.
