The Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889 established county joint education committees to draw up plans for county schools (later grammar schools) to be financed from a combination of the rates, a treasury grant, fees from pupils and the reorganisation of old endowments. The Education Committees of Radnorshire County Council was made responsible for elementary and intermediate schools. Llandrindod Wells Intermediate School, later Grammar School, was established in the late 19th century and was amalgamated with Rhayader Secondary and Clyro Court Secondary in 1972 to create Llandrindod High School.
