Administrative and biographical history: Llandrindod Wells County School was established in the 1890s. It was known as Llandrindod Wells Grammar School from early 20th century. Llandrindod Wells Grammar School became part of the new Llandrindod High along with Rhayader Secondary and Clyro Court Secondary in 1972. John Beddoes School, Presteigne was the second independent grammar school to be founded in Wales, established in 1565 by local wool manufacturer John Beddoes. In 1902 the Board of Education opened the school to girls for the first time and it became known as the County School, only regaining its Grammar School title after the 1944 Education Act. As secondary education became universally available there were moves to replace the school with a secondary school at Knighton. This new school became a secondary modern school however, and the Presteigne establishment continued as a grammar school. It became known as Presteigne Grammar School from the 1950's. Following the closure of the Knighton school in 1970, Presteigne Grammar became fully comprehensive and the name John Beddoes was adopted.
