Administrative and biographical history: The Elan Valley dams to the east of Rhayader, Radnorshire, were built between 1893 and 1906 by the Birmingham Corporaton in order to supply water to the growing city of Birmingham. The system comprised a series of four dams and reservoirs on the Elan River and a 73 mile aqueduct to transport the water to Birmingham. The scheme employed several thousand construction workers, accommodated in the purpose built Elan Village which included an accident hospital and other facilities. The scheme was officially opened in July 1904 by King Edward VII.
Scope and content: Records relating to the Birmingham Corporaton's waterworks in the Elan Valley, 1885-1967, including letters of application and testimonials regarding employment at the Elan Valley Works, 1885-1904, papers relating to accidents and injuries, 1895-1899, and lists of employees working in Elan Valley, 1964-1967; civil registration records and vaccination registers for the Sub-District of Rhayader, Radnorshire, 1898-1944.
