Administrative and biographical history: Tithes were originally payments in kind to the church. The Tithe Commutation Act 1836 replaced these with a tithe rent-charge. The Tithe Commission was established to create a new administrative system and between 1836 and 1852 surveyors made large-scale maps and accompanying schedules that listed all landowners, tenants and field-names in a parish, as well as the land-use of each field.
