Administrative and biographical history: Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, Montgomeryshire, opened in 1903, linking the rural communities around Llanfair Caereinion to the town of Welshpool, initially with passenger and freight services. The line was operated by Cambrian Railways, the Great Western Railway, and British Rail, until it closed in 1956; passenger services had been withdrawn in 1931. The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway Preservation Company Ltd was formed in 1960, and the line was reopened in 1963.
