Administrative and biographical history: The National Society was established in 1811 to set up schools in which the children of the poor would be taught the Anglican religion. The British and Foreign Society was established in 1814 to promote non-sectarian education. There was no state funding of education, and these schools were dependent on voluntary contributions. School boards were established under the Elementary Education Act of 1870, in areas with inadequate voluntary school provision. The Boards could raise a local rate to pay for new schools. County (later Grammar) schools were provided by the Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889, providing rate-aided public secondary education. The Education Act of 1902 abolished them, and County Councils became the local education authorities.
Scope and content: Minute books of Coleg Howell Harris, Trefeca, 1967-1973; logbooks, attendance and admission registers of various primary schools, [c. 1503]-1996, including notes on Saint Detyw's church and list of incumbents, [c. 1503]-1959, from Tal-y-bont National (Voluntary Primary) School, Llanddeti; Breconshire County Council school boards minutes, 1871-1997, and secondary schools logbooks, attendance and admission registers, 1895-1974.
