Administrative and biographical history: Montgomery ecclesiastical parish, Montgomeryshire, is part of the Diocese of St Asaph. From the 16th century to the late 19th century ecclesiastical and civil administration at the parish level was supervised through the monthly vestry meetings. The vestry consisted of the minister, churchwardens and other parishioners who met in the parish church, St Nicholas'. Their civil responsibilities included poor rates and highways. Under the Local Government Act 1894 the ecclesiastical and civil functions were separated and parish councils were established to handle civil administration. St Nicholas' church was founded in 1227. Changes and restorations undertaken to the church over the years have required licences (faculties) from the bishop.
