CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: Llanfechain ecclesiastical parish, Montgomeryshire, is part of the Diocese of St Asaph. From the 16th century to the late 19th century ecclesiastical and civil administration at the parish level was supervised through the monthly vestry meetings. The vestry consisted of the minister, churchwardens and other parishioners, meeting in the parish church, St Garmon's. Their civil responsibilities included poor rates and highways. Under the Local Government Act 1894 the two functions were separated with parish councils being established to handle civil administration.
