Administrative and biographical history: The Powysland Club was founded in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, in 1867, making it the oldest county historical society in Wales. Club members established the Powysland Museum in 1874. From 1868 the Club has also published the journal Montgomeryshire Collections. The Club also collected archival material relating to Montgomeryshire. Robert Owen (1865-1948) of Welshpool was a local historian, a member of the Powysland Club's Council and a printer and publisher. He wrote on Welshpool and Montgomeryshire history, including the volumes In the Heart of Powysland (Welshpool, 1930) and (with J. E. Roberts) The Story of Montgomeryshire (Cardiff, 1916). Roderick Urwick Sayce (1890-1970) was a social anthropologist, born in Welshpool. He studied at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, gaining an MA in Geography and later edited Montgomeryshire Collections. Thomas Jones (fl. 1843-48) and David Jones (d. 1920) were Police constables based in Montgomeryshire.
Scope and content: Documents relating to Welshpool and Montgomeryshire, 1745-1982, including Robert Owen papers relating to Welshpool, 1745-1917, including poor rates, 1745-1792, Welshpool Vestry minutes, 1793-1849, and notes, [20th century]; R. U. Sayce university notes, 1919; journals of Thomas Jones, 1843-1848; sales particulars, 1825-1935, including the Leighton Hall estate, 1931; notebooks of David Jones, 1881-1911; rental of Francis Allen, 1822-1852; Carreghofa tithe map and apportionment, 1828, 1837.
