Administrative and biographical history: The Liberal Party was formed in 1859; its fortunes waned during the 20th century and in 1981 it formed an Alliance with the newly-formed Social Democratic Party (SDP). In 1988 the two parties merged as the Social & Liberal Democrats, later becoming the Liberal Democrats. Except for the period 1979-1983, Montgomeryshire has been represented by a Liberal MP since the 19th century. Alex Carlile (b. 1948), Barrister and QC, reclaimed Montgomeryshire for the Liberals in 1983. From 1992 he was the Liberal Democrats' Welsh leader and Welsh affairs spokesman, but stood down at the 1997 General Election.
