Administrative and biographical history: Rhayader Rural District Council (RDC), Radnorshire, was created under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and comprised the parishes of Abbey Cwm-hir, Cefnllys Rural, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Helygen, Llanyre, Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr, Nantmel, Rhayader and St Harmon. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman and originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities. The Council's responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, maintaining local roads, cemeteries and parks, licensing of public entertainments, water supply and housing. The Council also became a rating authority in 1925. Rural District Councils were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Rating Officer and Housing Officer. Rhayader RDC was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation, being absorbed into Radnorshire District Council.
Scope and content: Records of Rhayader Rural District Council, 1893-1975, comprising Clerk's records, 1893-1975, including minutes, 1898-1974, registers of deeds and mortgages, 1893-1974, mortgages, securities and agreements, 1930-1975, and burial books, 1951-1974; financial records, 1901-1975, including general ledgers, 1901-1975, and salary records, 1962-; Rating Officer's records, 1955-1974; and housing registers, 1912-1974.
