Administrative and biographical history: David Lloyd (d. c. 1701) of the old family of Wern-newydd, Llanarth, Cardiganshire, had four sons, all of whom died without issue. His two surviving daughters were Bridget, who married Morgan Lloyd, of Glansevin, Carmarthenshire, and Posthuma, who, in 1724, married Robert Lewis (d. pre 1732) of Cwmdeuddwr, Radnorshire. On the death of Richard Lloyd, the only surviving brother, in 1757, the Wern-newydd estate passed to his nephew, Thomas Lewis (1725-1782), the son of Robert and Posthuma Lewis. Robert Lewis was the son of Thomas Lewis (c. 1641-1709) and Elizabeth (d. 1736), his wife and cousin, daughter of Howell Powell (d. 1671) of Nantgwyllt, Radnorshire. In 1765, Thomas Lewis (1725-1782) took the additional surname Lloyd, the same year that he married Margaret Lewis (d. 1807) of Coed-y-mynach. In 1794, their daughter and only surviving child, Elizabeth (1770-1803), married John Lewis (d. 1828), of Camdeuddwr, and later described as of Nantgwyllt and Coed-y-mynach. In 1824, their son, Thomas Lewis, again took the additional surname Lloyd. Thomas Lewis-Lloyd married Anna, daughter of E. Davies of Treforgan, Cardiganshire. In 1865, their son, Robert Lewis-Lloyd (1836-1915), married Mary Anne Jane (d. 1916), eldest daughter of John Lewes of Llanllyr, Cardiganshire. According to the 1873 return of owners of land, Robert Lewis-Lloyd of Nantgwyllt owned an estimated 7,896 acres in Cardiganshire, Brecknockshire, Radnorshire and Pembrokeshire, with an estimated annual rental of £3,045. In 1893, he sold Nantgwyllt mansion and much of the estate for £149,350 to Birmingham City Corporation, prior to the construction of the Elan and Claerwen reservoirs. Nantgwyllt was demolished before the valley was flooded to form the Caban-coch reservoir in 1904. Robert Lewis-Lloyd's eldest son, Robert Wharton Lewis-Lloyd (1866-1905), predeceased him, but left a son, Robert Evan Lewis-Lloyd (1895-1918, dsp.). The remaining interest in the estate then descended to the younger children of Robert Lewis-Lloyd. The Lewis family's connection with the Bloomfield and Plaindealings estate in Pembrokeshire remains unclear.
