Administrative and biographical history: Llanfyllin Rural District Council, Montgomeryshire, was created under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and comprised the parishes of Bausley, Carreghofa, Castle Caereinion Rural, Garthbeibio, Guilsfield Without, Hirnant, Llandrinio, Llandysilio, Llanerfyl, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfechain, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llangynog, Llangynyw, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llansanffraid Deuddwr, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain (Pool), Llanwddyn, Meifod and Pennant. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman and originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities. The Council's responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, maintaining local roads, cemeteries and parks, licensing of public entertainments, water supply and housing. The Council also became a rating authority in 1925. Rural District Councils were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Public Health Inspector, Housing Officer, Surveyor and Rating Officer. Llanfyllin Rural District Council was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation, being absorbed into Montgomeryshire District Council.


Scope and content: Records of Llanfyllin Rural District Council, 1901-1974, including registers of mortgages, 1901-1935, 1962-1973; licences for slaughter, 1954-1973; financial records, 1936-1974; rate books and other rating and valuation records, 1929-1974; new dwellings registers, 1951-1973; and miscellaneous registers, 1929-1964.
