Administrative and biographical history: Swansea has the distinction of being home to the oldest Jewish community in Wales. According to tradition, Jews have been resident in the city since at least the 1730s. The first formal Jewish institution to be established in Swansea was the Jewish cemetery on Townhill in 1768. The first purpose built synagogue was opened in Waterloo Street in 1818. This was replaced in 1859 by the Goat Street synagogue. This building served the community until February 1941 when it was destroyed during the Three Nights Blitz. In 1955, after a period without a permanent home, the congregation moved to a new synagogue at Ffynone. In 2009, the Swansea Hebrew Congregation took the decision to sell the Ffynone synagogue. However the congregation continues to meet for religious worship, keeping alive a tradition that dates back well over 250 years.
