CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: Briton Ferry Urban District Council (UDC), Glamorgan, was established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman and initially took over the powers of Briton Ferry Local Board of Health. The Council's responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Briton Ferry UDC was abolished under the Neath Corporation Act 1922, with the urban district being absorbed by the Borough of Neath.
