Administrative and biographical history: The City and County of Swansea is a unitary authority created in 1994. It comprises the area of the former City of Swansea and the southern part of the Lliw Valley Borough. These records relate to the Chief Executive's Department. Desmond Thomas was Lord Mayor of Swansea in 1996. Thomas Jones (1924-1997) was Leader of the City and County of Swansea. The Community News is the community newspaper of the City and County of Swansea. The Swansea Leader is a bi-monthly newspaper published by the authority. Sweyn's Eye was the Council's staff newsletter, later replaced by Top.news. The referendum on devolution for Wales was held on 18 September 1997.
