Administrative and biographical history: The medieval borough of Swansea was made autonomous from the surrounding county of Glamorgan in 1889 and became a county borough. In 1969 the borough was granted city status. Following local government reorganisation in 1974 boroughs and county boroughs ceased to exit. Swansea retained the title of City.In September 1835, Swansea's old corporation was replaced by a new municipal corporation.
Scope and content: James & Collins solicitors bill book, 1821-1834; Common Attorney's accounts, 1842-1865; various papers, 1898-1974, from the Chief Executive's and Town Clerk's Department on electricity supplies, 1915-1947; aerodromes, 1905-1939; water agreements, 1905-1926; cemetry byelaws, 1914-1963; Emergency Fire Brigade, 1937-1941; Workmen Compensation Acts, 1928-1948; war charities, 1916-1937; mental defiency, 1935-1947, and housing, 1932-1970; photographs, 1930-[1990s]; electoral registers and burgess rolls, 1839-1996; Swansea Grand Theatre programmes, 1897-1985; and town twinning and friendship agreements, 1982-1992.
