Administrative and biographical history: Carmarthen was a borough council until it lost its Borough status in 1972 with the re-organisation of local government. It also had a Town Council (with powers of a parish council). A successor Community Council, with dignity of Town Council, was established. The mayor received the title of Town Mayor in 1972. The Town Council has eighteen members who elect a Sheriff, a Deputy Mayor and a Mayor every year.
