Administrative and biographical history: From the late 19th century until 1957 (1962, in the case of Aberystwyth Borough and Rural District Council) responsibility for water provision in Cardiganshire lay with borough and rural district councils or sanitary authorities (including Newcastle Emlyn Rural District Council, part of which lay in Carmarthenshire). South Cardiganshire Water Board was formed in 1956, and Cardiganshire Water Board in 1962. The water functions of seven constituent authorities were transferred to these bodies, together with those of Aberystwyth Borough and Rural District Council. In 1974 the Welsh Water Authority took over Cardiganshire Water Board. The Teifi and Ayron Fishery Boards were combined in 1934.

Archival history: Due to the diverse sources of the records of Cardiganshire water suppliers inherited by the Welsh Water Authority in 1974, many of the records have more than one file reference. The records were re-catalogued by the Cardiganshire Record Office so that the authorities, except the water boards, have been arranged alphabetically, by authority and chronologically within the authorities. The South Cardiganshire and Cardiganshire records have been divided into Clerk/Treasurer and Engineer's departments, following the original filing system where possible.
Immediate source of acquisition: Part deposited by the Welsh Water Authority, Area Office, Aberaeron, 1980, 1985; further Water Board and Teifi and Ayron Fishery Board records deposited by the Divisional Administrator, Welsh Water Authority, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, per the Pembrokeshire Record Office, 1979; South West Wales River Authority records deposited by the County Archivist, Cambridgeshire, England, per Carmarthen Record Office, 1984; South West Wales River Board records deposited by the Liaison Officer, Public Record Office, Kew, England, 1985.
